At the end of January some of our employees visited Brentwood Elementary and taught students about road building, water conservation, and water filtration. The activities connected with Brentwood’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) program. In 2021 the school invited Banning Engineering and other local companies to participate in their 2022 STEAM Program. Each company chose a month to come and teach the students about their industry. During the program, the first-grade students learned about water conservation and filtration, while the kindergarten and 2nd through 5th-grade students experienced the sweet street road-building activity. Throughout the day, different classes gathered in the gym for 30-minute presentations and activities geared towards water or road building. During the presentation, students wore Banning Engineering hard hats and safety vests. Mark Butler & Josh Selig led the road-building demonstration. Josh also helped Jeff Henson lead the water activities. Students asked questions like how long roads were and why they are made of layers. Mark described the layers of a road like a lasagna, explaining that each layer has a purpose. The Little Quakers were also interested in what engineers do, how our staff members became engineers, and how old each employee was. Overall, it was a fun day, and we are thankful for the opportunity to partner with local schools and expose students to our industry.
